«Surely, any rational person can only be concerned with the situation in Greece. But, it is also accurate to say that the decisions about the future of Greece will be taken by the Greek people», stated the Minister of State, Minister for Foreign Affairs Paulo Portas, at the Foreign Affairs Council Meeting that took place in Brussels. The Portuguese Foreign Minister praised the social cohesion and political stability in Portugal, differentiating the country from Greece.
The Prime Minister Pedro Passos Celho said he hopes «common sense does not lead to the European launch of threats to the Greeks as to what might happen to them in retaliation» of the their decisions. Instead, «the appeal must be directed to the notion of responsibility, of wisdom, of practical sense of organization that states need to have». These statements were made in the biweekly debate in Parliament responding to a question.
